Gapstow Bridge in the Fall, Central Park, New York City

Gapstow Bridge in the Fall, Central Park, New York City

Seems like the Gapstow Bridge looks good in any season, any weather…

This was shot in November, around the same time as some other shots of mine of Gapstow. It just fits into the landscape so nicely that it needs to get shot over and over.

And it’s also amazing how this is the same bridge, shot from the other direction looks like it sits in a deep valley of urbanity, while shot this way looks like a bridge set in the rolling hills of upstate, not a hint of New York City in sight.

Gapstow Bridge With 5th Avenue and Central Park South, Central Park, New York City

Gapstow Bridge With 5th Avenue and Central Park South, Central Park, New York City

The Gapstow Bridge wasn’t in the original Central Park plan, but the popularity of the park necessitated additional paths, bridges and other elements to benefit visitors. Gapstow was initial a wood bridge, but was rebuilt in stone to the one you can cross today.

This view is one of the best to combine the cityscape and the park’s natural beauty, It’s a uniquely New York relationship – the people’s park with the urban landscape, the organic shapes of the bridges and paths to the very straight lines of the buildings of the city, the edge between the two parts of the city, both vital to the other…

This was shot in November, so there was still a bit of green and yellows in the park and a bit of warmth still in the air.

Inscope Arch Set Amongst the Overflowing Ivy, Central Park, New York City

Inscope Arch Set Amongst the Overflowing Ivy, Central Park, New York City

Inscope Arch, which to me looks like something out of The Hobbit, is a little known bridge that’s kinda hidden under the path the horse-drawn carriages use in the park on their way back to Central Park South. And with the popularity of the horses, this arch was added to allow pedestrians to cross the path more easily…

In the fall it is overgrown with ivy, and the overgrowth with the arches thick walls give it a cozy, rustic feeling.
