A friend’s son just came home from Afghanistan this past weekend. The last few weeks have been the hardest for her and her family, as the days and hours count down to his return.
He is a Marine. A humble person I am told, I have never met him. But in photos he looks so much like his Mother. It is pretty incredible for her that he is back and their family is together once again.
This view of the Marines is from the East Coast Memorial, dedicated by President Kennedy in 1963 to the soldiers in all the Armed Forces who lost their lives in the Western Atlantic Ocean in World War II.
I think about these two things and the connections that they make for me, and my appreciation of the past and the present…
